Ladakh is a mountainous region in the northwest Jammu and Kashmir area in north India and the area known as the Trans-Himalaya which is icy and at a high altitude. Ladakh is at its most enchantingly human and scenically stunning, a rugged high-altitude desert softened with Tibetan temples, irrigated paddies and mesmerising mountain lakes. Ladakh literally means land of many passes. The mountain ranges in this region were formed over 45 million years by the folding of the Indian plate into the Eurasian Plate.
